Pub sings are a great way to enjoy traditional Irish music in a relaxed, informal setting. In Ireland, the UK, and America, pub sings are an old and cherished tradition. In the modern day, these gatherings provide a chance for people to come together, share a pint (or two), and enjoy some good old-fashioned singing.
Fun Fact:
The first recorded pub sing took place in the year 1287! In those days, pub singers were often traveling minstrels, performing for tips and drinks.
If you’re new to pub sings, you might have a few questions:

Getting Settled at the Venue
Most pub sings take place in traditional Irish pubs, so you can expect a lively atmosphere. There is typically no cover charge or admission fee, and people of all ages and abilities are welcome. Because these events are free to attend, it’s always a good idea to buy a drink or two to support the venue. You should also keep an eye out for ways to support the musicians leading the group!
Tip: Buy a round!
It’s tradition to buy a round of drinks for the people you’re singing with. It’s a great way to make new friends at a pub sing, or treat the friends you came with.
When you arrive at a pub sing, you will usually find people milling about, chatting, and enjoying drinks. Before the music starts, you’ll need to find a songbook. These are usually available at the pub (sometimes opened on your smartphone via QR code), or you can bring your own.
Arrive early to snag a good spot. To be in the thick of the singing, it’s best to arrive early and find a spot near the front. If you’re more into the “pub” part than the “sing” part, it might be wise to find a spot closer to the bar. If you are not into music at all, find a different pub.
Once you have found a seat and a song book, all you need to do is sit back and enjoy the music!
Music at Pub Sings
The music at pub sings is typically led by a single person or small group. The leader will choose the songs and set the pace. Typically, the song leader will sing the first verse of each song solo. The rest of the group will then join in on the chorus.
Sometimes, the song leader will split up parts of the music amongst the group. They might assign different verses to different sections of the room, or set up a call-and-response in one of the songs. If you’re feeling bold, you may even have an opportunity to volunteer for a solo verse!
If you don’t know the tune of any particular song, you can listen to the person leading the sing-along and follow along. You don’t need to be a singer to join in, and there is no need to worry about singing perfectly or on key. Just let loose and have fun!
If you do not want to sing, it’s helpful to know a few basic chords on the guitar or ukulele. It is also OK to simply enjoy listening to the others!
